I know what you are thinking, because I thought it too. Oatmeal on a food blog? I promise, if you give it a chance you won’t be disappointed. In fact, you may even want to start practicing your “Parent of the Year” speech, because this is it.
This is the breakfast that will get you the winning votes. Not only is it easy to whip up, but it’s healthy and your kids will thank you for it, and maybe even ask for more…but it will already be gone.
You can send them out the door, knowing they will come back healthier, smarter, and still energized. Gold Star on your forehead.
After they’ve gone, perhaps you’ll even get a bowl yourself, and you can cozy up to a blanket and a good book, for just a few minutes anyway.
Banana Nut Oatmeal
(from Kitchen Simplicity)
Serves 2-3
Ingredients
1 cup water
1 cup milk
1 banana, mashed
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
sprinkle of nutmeg
pinch of salt
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 cup old fashioned oats (FYI: rolled oats)
1/4 cup preferred nuts, I used sliced almonds
Directions
In a medium size sauce pan, combine all ingredients except oats and nuts. Bring to a boil over med-high heat, stirring often. Stir in oats, and turn down heat to medium, simmer for 8-10 minutes till desired consistency. Garnish each bowl with nuts as preferred. Enjoy! Especially on cold mornings.
*This post is dedicated to my older brother, Jake, who eats oatmeal religiously everyday because he knows what a super food it is.

This could potentially be dedicated to me, too, because I eat oatmeal religiously, too. Less for health reasons and more as a vehicle for eating extra brown sugar and butter. Your oatmeal looks deeelicious.
Well then, I dedicate it to you too! Thanks for stopping by.
Delicious! Sammy loved it too! Thanks!
Oh so glad to hear it. My kids gobbled it up, and so did I.
You’ll have to modify this to be made in the microwave or over the campstove before Jake would eat it…unless someone else makes it for him
The way Jake eats his “oatmeal party” is gross. This looks way better.
Aw, well I don’t care how he makes it, he still eats it daily. He’ll be alive till he’s 110!
